Let's look at the rest of the players

Continuing with the other two parts let's take a look at the players that have long contracts remaining.

Players with contracts expiring in 2016 and beyond

These are the players that on paper should stay with the club for three or more years. I say on paper because it won't be surprising if some of the names on that list are not with Juve next year. The long contracts given to the players above is not necessarily a sign of blind faith, more likely it is a way to amortize their cost or to buy the club time to develop the player.

These contracts are so far away from expiring that have no need to be revised and will not likely be touched for a while with a few exceptions, namely Vidal, Pogba and maybe Marchisio or Bonucci.

The Chilean has a low salary and is highly coveted by other clubs in Europe. Recently, Jupp Heynckes' agent went on record saying that Bayern offered Juventus 45m euros last year for the player. And the offers are not likely to stop there. I think Vidal is comfortable in Turin and is not pushing for a move. With that being said, he is 25 and his contract can easily be extended for two more years until 2018 with a modest increase in salary and a higher increase in bonuses. It is certainly not something that has to be done over the summer but could be looked at during next season.

Pogba is a totally different story. His salary is pretty low for what can be considered a starter over the next few years. The main issue with Pogba is his agent, Mino Raiola. Raiola went on record a few days ago stating that anyone that is interested in Pogba should contact him. Moreover, he said that contracts are meaningless if there is enough interest from a buying club and the player. In other words, he is already looking at suitors for young Pogba. The other option is that he is trying to push the club to revise Pogba's contract. This is one of those players that could easily have his contract revamped considerably and extended for a long period of time. Remember that Raiola is the same guy who was pushing for a Nedved move to Inter after he retired from Juventus. The guy is as loyal as Zlatan and has the means and know how to cause trouble. I would hate to see Juventus negotiating with Mino Raiola over a player with only 2 years left on his contract.

Marchisio and Bonucci are the other starters with contracts expiring in 2016. Given their age and attachment to the shirt I am not concerned with them leaving anytime soon. A revamped contract would be a reward for all their work and growth over the last two seasons.

With the exception of Caceres and Asamoah, all the other players on that list that were not already discussed above, could be sold or traded if more capable/promising replacements are brought in. Matri, Padoin and Isla are certainly expendable (the latter less so due to the high investment) if the price is right.

Conclusion

I imagine that over the summer the club will be willing to trade any of the players in the roster with the exception of the starting back three, Marchisio, Vidal, Pirlo, Pogba and of course Buffon. I also don't imagine they will sell more than one of the regular starters (i.e. Lichtsteiner, Vucinic and to a lesser extent Asamoah). Replacing some of the bench players with better alternatives can also contribute to making this team more competitive.

The team is well setup as is, but replacing one of Giaccherini with Andrea Poli in the center of the field will do wonders for us in the short and long-term. Those substitutes will allow the better players to rest during the season and will instantaneously raise our competitiveness in Europe.

It will be a busy summer for Marotta & Co. and it will be interesting to see what the long term plans for the club are as more quality is added. A telling factor of where we are headed would be to see who Juventus chooses to renew and pour more confidence into, and who the club chooses to trade.

Tell us what you think.

And we are back...

If you need to read an intro, check out Part I of this series. Let's just dive into the next group of players

Players with contracts expiring on 2015.

Long list, I know

Buffon's contract was renewed a few months ago so it is unlikely that it will be looked at this summer. After signing his contract he said that he wouldn't want to steal from Juventus and that he will leave once he sees his contributions diminish. Talk about class!!! Buffon's departure in a few years (he will be 37 when his current contract expires) means that for the first time in over a decade Juventus will need to find a new number 1. I dread the day that happens but the management must start getting ready for such a day (see Part I).

King Giorgio's contract also expires in 2015. Unlike Buffon, Chiellini will only be 30 years old by then. I am sure a contract revision should be expected soon as I highly doubt the club would want to part with such a great defender. The only stumbling block when renewing Giorgio's contract will be his desire to test himself elsewhere. At 30 years old he may want a challenge outside of Italy (I don't think he will move to another Italian team as a professional) and may want to look into other leagues. With that being said, there are not many teams that can offer being competitive at the highest levels for years to come.

Barzagli's situation is a little different. He will be 33 in 2015 and is likely to have only a few years ahead of him after the summer of 2015. The club will be wise to wait one more year and see if Andrea keeps being his rock-solid-self by next summer before deciding what to do. Just like with Buffon, Juve must start thinking about life without Barzagli. Sorensen and Masi can help ease the loss of such a rock at the back but they have plenty to learn before they get to such levels. I imagine that when Barzagli leaves, the team will transition to a four man backline, at least for a while. Unless the plan is to move Bonucci to the right leaving space for young Luca Marrone.

The last defender of the bunch is Lichtsteiner. On the one hand, he will be 31 in 2015, his pace and stamina may start to suffer and his value will tank shortly thereafter (think Maicon). On the other hand his determination and drive will remain intact, and with a few tactical tweaks, he can continue to produce for Juventus (think Nedved, although he wasn't a fullback). The club will be at the crossroads with Lichtsteiner this summer. They could sell him for a significant price because his contract doesn't expire for a while. The problem is that the club will need to find a suitable substitute for that position. I really doubt that whoever we bring will be as good as the Swiss, at least not right away. A contract extension until 2016 may suit all interested parties, however, I can see the logic in selling the Swiss train. There is a reason why we have Caceres, and there is a reason why we spent 18m on Isla, and there is also fan-favorite Simone Padoin. There will be some growing pains, but I think these players have what it takes to make that position their own (minus Padoin). Moreover, the money raised from a Lichtsteiner deal can help other areas of the pitch. Isla and Caceres may not be as good as Lichtsteiner, but remember that Capello won a scudetto with Zebina at full back. Caceres and Isla are way better than the Frenchman, and with Lichtsteiner gone elsewhere, will enjoy increased playtime and all the benefits that it brings.

At 22, Luca Marrone will renew with Juventus (maybe not this summer but before long). He may leave us for a year or two to get experience elsewhere or he may stay with us playing vice-Bonucci, but rest assured, he will be in our books for a few more years at least.

Pepe's contract will depend largely on his form after his lengthy injury. The club will probably sit on this one for one more year.

Giaccherini is a few years younger than Pepe, he is well liked by the team and management and is happy with a substitute role at Juventus and why wouldn't he be. He plays a decent amount of time and contributes meaningfully when called up. His situation will largely depend on who else is brought this summer but given his versatility, I think Giaccherini's will stay with us for a little longer. I imagine the club will wait at least another year before making a decision. Giaccherini is the perfect player for trading with bottom table clubs for their young and growing superstars.

This leaves us the strikers. Vucinic's importance was highlighted in the Champions League quarterfinals. Although we are all dying for a top notch support striker I really doubt we will get one. If we do then I can see Vucinic leaving but not the way things are. The club will probably sit on this one for another year before making a decision. As for Quagliarella, as much as I like the guy and his PlayStation goals I think it is time to say goodbye. He has been underutilized this year and will likely be our new Bendtner or Anelka once Llorente comes into the team.

Giovinco's contract length was surprising. We bought him in 2012 and offered him only a 3 year contract. It may have been because his low cost was easy to amortize over a smaller period of time compared to say Vucinic's. Or may be because Giovinco or his entourage thought he could demand a much higher contract in one or two summers. As things stand he has been less than a superstar and I think the club will be wise to wait for another year. If he improves significantly then renew the contract. However, if he continues with his current form, then I think we can get a good return on our investment, not many Serie A sides will say no to having Giovinco in exchange for another player. His stock may also be high in Spain.

In Part III we will look at all the other players with contracts expiring after 2015. Don't forget to leave your comments below.

A look at the contracts of Juve's squad

Beppe Marotta has one clear task this summer: Improve the attack and add quality backups to an already talented team. Although he still needs to demonstrate he can deliver in the former, the increase in capital and prestige over the last year should prove his task easier. Also, last year he showed he can increase the quality of "reserves" (see Asamoah, Pogba, Peluso, and to a lesser extent Isla). I would argue there is a third task for good ol' Beppe: revise the existing contracts of current Juve players. With the economical demands placed on Italian teams and having players who have demonstrated to be worthy of the Juve shirt, this task may be just as important as the other two.

At the moment there are four players with contracts expiring this summer or next year (i.e. they will leave for free if we don't sell them this summer). In addition, there are 10 players with contracts expiring in 2015, and 10 players with contracts expiring in 2016 and 2017. Federico Peluso is not part of this review since he is on loan and we have no knowledge of his contract length.

Players with contracts expiring on or before July 2014

With all due respect, Rubinho and Anelka won't be missed by many once July 2013 hits. The Frenchman will for sure leave by the summer while Rubinho's contract must be examined in the context of Storari's future.

Until I started this article I had no idea that Storari's contract was expiring so soon. He is our Coppa Italia keeper and, barring a long-term Buffon injury, will remain in that position for one more year. At his age I really doubt there will be many clubs that could lure him away from the Bianconeri should Juventus choose to renew his contract until 2015.

I imagine Storari's situation will dependent on how our other keepers perform. If Leali or Branescu get Serie A exposure, I can understand the club not renewing Storari's contract and bringing one of the youngsters as Buffon's backup. This is such a tricky position because in this case Leali/Branescu will get at most 5 Coppa Italia matches in one year (plus any of Buffon's injuries or suspensions). Those numbers will likely hinder our young keepers' growth. I for one am ok with having Storari until 2015 and giving our youngsters plenty of time to grow in a Serie A club.

Rubinho's contract will depend on what happens to Storari. I highly doubt that Marco Storari will accept being Juve's third choice keeper behind Leali or Branescu (and with all reason). Rubinho on the other hand may be more likely to accept a 3rd choice role with the team should a youngster be brought as our number 12.

The one big name in the list is Andrea Pirlo. He is only 33 and a reference point for the team. Pogba has impressed many but he is does not have the passing range that Pirlo has and I think all will agree that the former Milan player has plenty to give when rested. I imagine that next year we will see more Pogba and less Pirlo as the season develops however, I think that Pirlo can still produce great displays if he is playing less regularly. The club and the player know that the time to say goodbye will come, but Pirlo will be a necessary weapon to solve some games. I don't imagine there will be many teams in Serie A who can boast having a player like Pirlo on the bench while their 20 year old wonderkid is tearing up the opposition. With this in mind I imagine that his contract will be extended by one or even two years. This will give Juve the time to transition to a Pirlo-less Juve. Pirlo just needs to be ok with a diminished role over time.

Part II of this article will be on the players with contracts expiring in June 2015.
