What needs to happen for Juventus to clinch the title

Results elsewhere mean it could be less than 24 hours to title time.

For the last few rounds of games, I’ve been giving the math about title clinching at the end of my match reports. Now, the end is close enough that we’ve decided to put it in one convenient spot for everyone.

After Monday’s win against Lazio, Juve’s magic number was four points, either gained themselves, dropped by their closest pursuers, Inter, or a combination thereof.

The well-known frauds from Milan (sorry for stealing your line, Sergio) obligingly helped out on Wednesday, playing out a goalless draw against Fiorentina to drop that number to two. That means the situation tomorrow for Juventus is very, very simple:

JUVENTUS WIN THE TITLE IF

They defeat Udinese.

Should Udinese stage an upset, the situation would be as follows:

JUVENTUS WIN THE TITLE IF

They defeat Sampdoria,

OR

Juventus draw against Sampdoria AND Inter fails to defeat Genoa,

OR

Inter lose to Genoa.

Inter play Genoa on Saturday, so it is possible in that scenario for Juve to win the title sul divano (that’s one of my favorite calcio phrases of all time), but obviously everyone here is hoping that the weekend’s games are a moot point after the final whistle in Udine tomorrow.
