Gianluigi Buffon just played one of the best games he’s played over the last couple of years on Thursday night against AC Milan. It came a couple of weeks after his 42nd birthday, which would not really be possible for 99.9 percent of the football world since nobody at that age is even close to being a game-changing kind of player.

Basically, it was the reaffirmation that the old man still had a few more goalkeeping tricks left in his body, one that has dived to his left and right and flown to tip shots over the cross bar probably hundreds of thousands times over in his career.

Not bad for a backup goalkeeper, huh?

According to Saturday morning’s edition of Tuttosport, Buffon could very well be in store for another season of being the No. 2 keeper behind the recently-extended Wojciech Szczesny. As Tuttosport notes, Buffon, his representatives and Juventus President Andrea Agnelli are set to meet next month to discuss a contract extension for the 42-year-old legend of a goalkeeper who has been quite the model citizen in his still new-ish role this season.

Szczesny got his contract extension just a few days ago.

And by every indication, Buffon isn’t going to be too far behind when it comes to his own contract extension that would add another year onto the deal he signed over the summer after his surprising comeback became official.

Not that Buffon was going to be a problem in the locker room since his role with Juventus was going to be much, much different than what it was when we all thought he had played his final game for the club in 2018. But to see him pretty much embrace the backup goalkeeper spot with his big open arms like he has can actually be one of the more refreshing things to take place during what has become a increasingly frustrating season.

With Szczesny signing his contract extension, Juventus has made it clear who is going to be in goal more often than not over the next couple of seasons. Given how well the Szczesny-Buffon dynamic seems to be and how complimentary they are of one another when the opportunity arrises, the two goalkeepers obviously like the way this situation has played out.

Buffon’s agent has talked recently about how much Buffon has enjoyed being back in Turin with Juventus and how happy he is playing football these days. And seeing as extending his return to Juventus by another seems more and more possible, it makes sense that Buffon is in such a happy position these days.

Then again, when you play like he did on Thursday night and be the age that Buffon is, it’s easy to see why he’s thinking that way.
