Cristiano Ronaldo lifted yet another trophy yesterday, yet another honor to add to the glittering list of awards he’s picked up over the years. Portugal beat Netherlands 1-0 in the Nations League final to become the first ever champions of the competition.
However, even when at such a moment of national triumph, Ronaldo’s thoughts were invariably about Juventus. At the final whistle, the Portuguese captain was observed talking to young Dutch defensive phenomenon Matthijs de Ligt.
In an interview after the game, De Ligt told Portuguese outlet NOS that the legend had taken him by surprise.
“Ronaldo asked me to come to Juventus,
“I was a little shocked by that question, that’s why I laughed. I didn’t understand him at first.”
This weekend, with rumours that Manchester City had yet another bid to Ajax Amsterdam for the youngster declined, it appears now it’ll be between Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and the Bianconeri.
Speaking to Univision, he added -
“Now I will go on vacation, I’ll think carefully about what is best for me and then I’ll decide. For a young player like me, it’s important to go to a club where I can play consistently. That’s the main issue.”
With Juventus’ defensive core ageing rapidly, de Ligt could find himself in exactly that kind of position very quickly if he would so choose.
