Game Time Thread: Juventus vs. Napoli

New, comments

It’s one of Juventus’ last big league fixtures remaining this season. It’d be an even bigger deal if the lead atop the Serie A standings wasn’t 13 points.

The return fixture of last season’s Juventus-Napoli matchup had quite a bit riding on it. After the course of the 90 or so minutes, there was even more riding on the result, a last-minute Napoli win at the Allianz Stadium that cut Juve’s lead to all of one single point with four rounds left to go.

This season, a Napoli win in the return fixture won’t even have Serie A’s second-place team anywhere close to where they were after beating Juventus last season.

It won’t be a one-point difference. Hell, it won’t even be a six- or seven-point difference.

No matter the result of tonight’s game at the Stadio San Paolo, Juventus will head back to Turin with a double-digit lead over Napoli. Win and the lead is 16 points. Draw, the lead is still ar 13. Lose, well, it’s 10 points and we’re probably going to be in all grumpy again.

I, personally, don’t want to be grumpy.

Therefore, Juventus should play well for our own good, right?

That’s just one guy’s opinion and I’ll leave it at that.

So here we are. Nine days before Juve’s clear-cut biggest game of the season playing a game that, in previous years, has held that kind of billing. But, because Juve is absolutely running away with the Serie A title this season, this Juventus-Napoli matchup doesn’t have the kind of stakes attached to it of previous years.

Maybe that will mean Juventus will actually play well since there’s not the massive pressure on their shoulders coming in. Or maybe they will continue to underwhelm like what happened last weekend against Bologna.

We’ll soon find out.

Join us for the fun — hopefully.
