Juventus beat Cagliari 1-0 away in a game that had a couple of controversial turning points that will result in it being talked about for all the wrong reasons. After the game, manager Massimiliano Allegri was relieved more than anything else.
“We adapted to a difficult match against an excellent Cagliari side. We weren’t quick in reacting to the second ball and despite playing well in the first half, we got caught out on the counter.
“The team fought hard in the second half. After we made it 1-0, we could have been more careful but the important thing is we won, staying on Napoli’s tail and breaking away from Roma and Inter. The lads have done their job in this last period; they deserve a holiday and a rest.”
Federico Bernardeschi, who scored the winner, was lucky not to give away a penalty when he appeared to block a Simone Padoin cross with his arm.
“After going 1-0 up, we could’ve added another goal, or at least done better to control the ball rather than allow Cagliari opportunities to equalise.
“I will say that Cagliari did not deserve to lose today. VAR is an instrument that was meant to reduce controversy, but instead it has increased it because people don’t accept the referee’s decision.”
The Bianconeri lost Paulo Dybala with a thigh injury during the game, just when they were starting to get some players back from injuries.
“We don’t know how bad it is now, but he will have tests. Fortunately we go into a two-week break now and he’ll evidently need to rest more than the others during that time, so hopefully will be fresh for the final weeks of the season.”
As far as this season’s goals for Juve, nothing has changed.
“Juventus have done our duty very well so far this season, as we are second in Serie A, through to the Champions League Round of 16 and the Coppa Italia Semi-Finals.
“There’s a will to win and move forwards ingrained in the club’s DNA. Now we have to pursue our seventh league title, fourth Coppa Italia and another Champions League final, hopefully winning it this time.
“All this is possible thanks to the amazing effort put in by everybody because running the extra yard really does make a difference in games.”
