As we look toward some massive Juventus-centered fixtures come the end of the international break in the month of April, we now know who the soon-to-be record-setting six-time defending Serie A champions will be tuning up for the 2017-18 campaign against.
And just like in the summer of 2013, they’ll be doing so in the United States.
At a press conference in Tuesday evening in New York, Juventus’ first summer opponents became known to the general public. Juventus will face Spanish giants Barcelona, defending French champions Paris Saint-Germain and Serie A rivals Roma within a nine-day period as part of the fifth annual International Champions Cup this summer. Juventus’ newly-unveiled summer schedule is as follows:
July 22: Juventus vs. Barcelona at East Rutherford, New Jersey (MetLife Stadium)
July 26: Juventus vs. Paris Saint-Germain at Miami, Florida (Hard Rock Stadium)
July 30: Juventus vs. Roma at Foxborough, Massachusetts (Gillette Stadium)
Start requesting your vacation time and booking your hotels for the last two weeks of July now, my fellow America-residing Juventus friends.
Juventus actually took part in this same International Champions Cup last season. But they were part of one of the less publicized groups that played its preseason minutes in Australia. The big boys, like they have been since the competition began a few years ago, were in the United States playing to massive crowds and doing their preseason work in some of the biggest and most well-known cities we have.
Now, we get to see Juventus do the same type of thing.
Besides Barcelona, PSG, Roma and Juventus, the are four teams taking part in the “tournament” are: Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham and Real Madrid.
I’ll go ahead and pose this question on the way out: When was the last time that Juve had this level of opposition in the summer months? Let’s just hope nobody gets hurt.
