So the truth is out now. For all his blazing pace, Cristiano Ronaldo is easier to keep in check than the wizardry of Lionel Messi. And this according to a man who faced both players in his long and distinguished career with Juventus and Italy, defender Giorgio Chiellini.
Speaking at an event in Turin yesterday, Chiellini said -
"Knowing all about your opponents is fundamental, even the individuals.
"It helps you understand their characteristics. Cristiano Ronaldo is a player you mark by trying to prevent him from coming inside on his right foot. As for Messi, you just make the sign of the cross and pray."
Fans of Juve would probably agree with him, having seen the best and worst of both players last year.
"Joking aside, each player has his own characteristics and you've got to make this kind of analysis."
Chiellini went on to comment on the bitter loss in the Champions League Final to Barcelona last season, a game he was unable to play in because of suspension -
"We could have won it," he said. "We had the chances and we could have done better. It wasn't a perfect game from us, but if we get another opportunity, we will be ready for it."
Juventus will have a mountain to climb to make that opportunity possible, as they will have to overcome Bayern Munich next Wednesday, having drawn 2-2 at home in the first leg.
"We've caught up, but we're not totally satisfied yet.
"The truth is we're very close to the finishing line, but we've not done anything yet. Everything can change in the next ten days."
