The updated variation of wingers up front in a 4-3-3/4-5-1 prevails as the top choice of formation in its first week of conception.
Between the goal posts, Gianluigi Buffon leads the way, as usual, with Neto receiving 16 percent of votes. The backline consists of the staples, Alex Sandro and Leonardo Bonucci, while the in-form Daniele Rugani also received a spot over the (probably still recovering) Giorgio Chiellini. Stephan Lichtsteiner also makes a return to the lineup in his return to eligibility.
The midfield answers were scattered, but the lack of rotation wins out again. Sami Khedira, Claudio Marchisio, and Miralem Pjanic continue to be selected as the top three choices in the center of the park. Hernanes did come close tho, with 42% of the votes, compared to Khedira’s 55 percent. Mario Lemina was initially on the ballot, but was not called up to the game day squad. He also received around 40 percent of the votes before we was removed.
Up front, the wonderboy Moise Kean was selected as a winger, coming off a strong late game showing against Sevilla. Mario Mandzukic and Juan Cuadrado were also vote in, and have also had some good showings as of late.
Seventy-two readers (or 61 percent), voted that they would give a bench player a start against their former team. Thirty-four voted Stefano Sturaro to play against Genoa. I guess I underestimated the lack of preference he has among BWRAO readers.
I would have a similar lineup to the one selected. Instead of Kean starting, I would push Alex Sandro up to the left wing, and let uncle Pat take the reigns for this game. If we go up by two goals, though, I would like to see Kean subbed in immediately. I would definitely roll with Rugani while he’s hot, we should really let Giorgio and Benatia recover completely. I would definitely give Sturaro a start against his old club over Sami Khedia. Even Simone Padoin* netted a big goal for us against his former team one time. I’d also get Hernanes in there, and give Claudio a break. I don’t want him playing on minimal rest too often coming off such a long injury layaway. Let Pjanic work out whatever issues he had against Sevilla by throwing him back into the arena.
*I probably just turned the comment section into a Padoin slobberfest just by mentioning the name
