Juventus vs. Borussia Monchengladbach isn't just a meeting between teams whose names get botched by out-of-the-country announcers. It is also the third game and official midway point of the Champions League group stage. One club enters Wednesday night's game at the top of the group, the other is in danger of hitting the midway point with absolutely nothing but a bad goal differential to show for their efforts.
As you can guess, Juventus is that first-place team and Gladbach are the ones at the bottom of the group's table.
But the thing is, though, as good as Juve have looked in the Champions League so far this season, it can change just like that. With Gladbach in serious need of points or else a trip to the Europa League looks like that much more of a possibility, then they're going to be looking for some kind of result despite the fact they're away from home.
Let's say Juventus win again, though, the ship continues to be righted and the early-season struggles seem more and more like a thing of the past. Throw in the fact that they will continue to set the pace in Group D, and Juve's Champions League campaign looks even better and better in a group that was going to be tough from the get-go. So while Juve continue to sit mid-table in Serie A, at least we can say they've got the chance to do more damage in Europe. Hey, could be worse...
