Sunday’s lunchtime kickoff didn’t result in Juventus’ poor run of form getting any better, as a scoreless draw against Genoa extended the Bianconeri’s struggles into the first international break of 2024.

And the beat goes on.

For Juventus, doesn’t mean anything good took place heading into the first international break of 2024.

Max Allegri’s squad only continued their horrid run of form, playing a scoreless draw against mid-table Genoa in front of a hometown crowd at the Allianz Stadium on Sunday that ended up booing them off the field both at halftime and the final whistle. It was another disheartening blow to a season that just two months ago had talk of a Scudetto race and bit things on the horizon. Since then, Juve have recorded just one win in their last eight games and seen their massive points gap between Serie A’s other clubs competing for a Champions League spot next season shrink with every passing weekend.

Not exactly how you want to go into an international break, that’s for sure.

On Episode 216 of The Old Lady Speaks Podcast, we discuss:

Takeaways from Juventus’ scoreless draw against Genoa — including how Dusan Vlahovic’s sending off reminded us of his old habbits of being irritated on the field, how nice Genoa’s away kit is, how things that Juve are now again struggling again are things we thought they had gotten over in the first half of the season.

This eight-game run from Juventus has us tired.

Thankfully, Juventus had a very strong first half of the season because the last eight games have not helped cement their standing in the top four.

The vibes are bad.

Twitter questions — including if there is any way Max Allegri fixes this and get his team back on track, and if we had to wake up so early in the U.S. to watch this game then why did it look like the team was so sleepy in Italy.

Juventus looked as bad as they’ve looked all season as their negative run stretched on.

Frosinone and Salernitana.

Those are the only teams that have won fewer games than Juventus in the eight-game stretch that has seen the Bianconeri tumble down the table.

Neither of them has won a match in that time.

Juve’s disastrous run of form stretched to one win in eight games — with only seven points gained in that time — continued with a drab goalless draw against Genoa on Sunday that risked allowing Roma to close the gap to fifth place to a mere nine points. It was a marked downturn from Juve’s last few games, when there were chances to be had that weren’t taken. Juve may have outshot Genoa 17-5, but 11 of those shots were blocked, and only two found the target.

The result was a feckless affair, even after Juve hit the post twice in the final 22 minutes of the match. It left the dissatisfied crowd at the Allianz Stadium booing their own team off the pitch again, and leaving everyone, pundit and fan alike, wondering just how much longer things can go without there being some sort of change.

Massimiliano Allegri had several players returning from injury or suspension for the home contest. Dusan Vlahovic had served out his yellow-card ban, while Adrien Rabiot returned from a rather gruesome dislocated toe, though he wasn’t quite yet fit to start. Mattia Perin and Mattia De Sciglio also returned to the bench, while Arkadiusz Milik joined Carlos Alcaraz on the trainer’s table. Allegri continued to lean on his usual 3-5-2 formation, with Wojceich Szczesny at its base. Federico Gatti, Bremer, and Danilo made up the back line. Andrea Cambiaso was rejoined by Filip Kostic on the wings after the latter’s two-game benching. Weston McKennie, Manuel Locatelli, and Fabio Miretti worked the midfield behind Vlahovic and Federico Chiesa.

Genoa manager Alberto Gilardino was without Aaron Martin, Alan Matturro, and Stefano Sabelli, but came out to counter Juve in a 3-4-2-1 setup. Josep Martinez sat in goal, protected by Koni De Winter, Mattia Bani, and Johan Vasquez. Djed Spence and Junior Messias played as the wing-backs, bracketing the midfield pivot of Milan Badelj and Morten Frendrup. Vitinha made his first start for the club alongside Albert Gudmundsson, with the two supporting Mateo Retegui in the striker’s role.

The tone of the game was set within the first few minutes, when both Vlahovic and Kostic had shots blocked. Szczesny was then quickly called into action when a free kick from Gudmundsson was flicked goalwards by Bani, forcing the Pole into a diving parry. The ensuing corner saw Vitinha hit long volley, but he didn’t get it cleanly and hit it easily to Szczesny. That would be the last time Genoa put a shot on frame all day long.

Problem was, Juve weren’t putting anything remotely close to Martinez’s goal, either. It wasn’t until 20 minutes after those first two blocked efforts that Juve even managed to take a shot. That was Gatti, whose 24-yard shot along the ground was easily picked up by the Spanish keeper.

Then the word “blocked” started coming into play again. Juve had three shots blocked in a four-minute span just after the half-hour, then another for good measure four minutes after that. Juve simply couldn’t get themselves into a rhythm despite turning the momentum into their favor after about 15 minutes of Genoa looking quite good. There were frequent miscommunications that led to, at best, busted attacks, and at worst out-and-out turnovers. The game could very much be summed up by a counterattack right at the end of the half, when Miretti made a good interception to start the move, only for Vlahovic to play the ball into space at the same second Chiesa, pulled up wanting it played to his feet.

The block party continued after the teams came out of the locker rooms, Vlahovic and Gatti both seeing their shots interdicted within the first 60 seconds of the half. Unfortunately, that about as much in the way of fireworks that either team created for a large chunk of the second half .

Things were so dire that Allegri, who in recent games had been slow to make any moves, made a triple change just before the hour mark, sending on Kenan Yildiz, Samuel Iling-Junior, and Rabiot for Chiesa, Kostic, and McKennie. The Frenchman instantly injected some life into the midfield, but the pieces still didn’t click. It wasn’t until 10 minutes later that anything noteworthy came about, when Yildiz cut inside from the left and dropped the ball off for Iling-Junior, who took one touch and fired a left-footed shot that took a weird bobble over the arms of Martinez, only to clip the outside of the post. It didn’t look like the keeper had touched it at all, although referee Antonio Giua gave Juve a corner. A second quickly followed, which was punched out for Cambiaso only to see it blazed over. A minute later, Cambiaso put in a good cross to the back post, but Vlahovic glanced a header wide.

The Serbia international had another chance off a Cambiaso cross with 15 minutes left, but he was thrown off balance as he left his feet and popped it over the bar. That miss took the wind out of the game’s sails, as Juve simply couldn’t find a way to threaten Genoa’s goal.

Another close call came just as normal time elapsed, when Yildiz’s ball came back out to Moise Kean, whose absurd run of bad luck this season continued when he thumped the ball flush off the post.

Bad turned to worse halfway through stoppage time, when Vlahovic was called for a foul on Martinez going up for a header. The frustrated striker was incensed at the call and made that known to Giua, who flashed him two yellow cards in quick succession. Juve’s game was again summed up at the end of the half, when Tim Weah couldn’t even figure out how to launch the ball into the box one last desperate time, instead passing the ball back as the final whistle sounded.

LE PAGELLE

WOJCIECH SZCZESNY - 6.5. Made one really good save and one routine one, then didn’t have much to do for the rest of the match.

FEDERICO GATTI - 6. Second on the team with four shots, and was the only member of the starting XI to put a shot on target (let that sink in for a second). Completed 92.5 percent of his passes as well.

BREMER - 6.5. Another striker bottled up in Serie A, this time Retegui, although he was a little tougher than some of the other ones. Ended the day with a game-high five interceptions and tied for the team lead in tackles with three.

DANILO - 6. Played with a card for most of the game, but did so quite well. Made a pair of tackles and completed 90 percent of his passes.

ANDREA CAMBIASO - 6. Created a couple of Juve’s more dangerous chances, putting in some excellent crosses from the right side. Three tackles on the defensive end as well. He continues to be one of Juve’s best performers.

WESTON McKENNIE - 5. Looked a little tired, and couldn’t come up with anything creative out of the midfield.

MANUEL LOCATELLI - 5.5. Made a good defensive contribution with three tackles and a pair of interceptions, but even though his pass completion was high he didn’t move the ball quickly enough to break through the Genoa defense.

FABIO MIRETTI - 6. Notched a pair of key passes, made a few good interceptions, but the forward lines failed when he got them into decent positions.

FILIP KOSTIC - 5. Had the chance to get himself back into good graces after two games out, but he simply didn’t do it. The drop in his production is stark, and he really shouldn’t be starting anymore.

FEDERICO CHIESA - 5. Tactically hampered by playing with Kostic, who occupies the same place he gravitates to. Frankly, tactically hampered by Allegri, because he’s a goddamn winger and not a striker. He’s just completely stifled right now, and it’s sad to watch.

DUSAN VLAHOVIC - 4.5. Took seven shots but couldn’t hit the target with one of them. Frankly, the seven shots is a surprise given how terrible the service he got was. But losing his cool at the end of the game was unacceptable.

SUBS

KENAN YILDIZ - 6. Two key passes on his stat sheet, and was probably the most dangerous man with the ball at his feet for the majority of the game.

SAMUEL ILING-JUNIOR - 5.5. Made a pair of key passes and was unlucky not to open the scoring when he hit the post, but made a number of mistakes too.

ADRIEN RABIOT - 5.5. Looked a little rusty but also injected some energy into the midfield that had been missing without him.

TIMOTHY WEAH - NR. Didn’t do much out on the right wing. He’s becoming black hole on this roster.

MOISE KEAN - NR. Man, is this dude unlucky or what? Eventually one of these shots is going to have to go in, right?

MANAGER ANALYSIS

Over the last few weeks I’ve been concerned about the level of preparation of this team. That concern has been pushed into a code red after this game.

This is a team that went into a mini ritirio — a voluntary one, at that — two days before the game. And yet, the players who went onto the field looked like they’d only just met. There was no coherence, no ideas, no plan, no knowledge of where the ball was going next. There were no ideas. No one knew what to do to break Genoa — a decidedly middle-of-the-road team — down. As the game wore on, frustration set in, as clearly shown by Vlahovic’s outburst.

Allegri fielded a question in the post-match press conference about whether or not he’s losing the locker room. He predictably denied that concept, but the results on the field are showing otherwise. These players are frustrated. What’s being done isn’t working, and they know it, but their coach refuses to change. When someone in the media has the temerity to suggest doing so, he defaults to Rage Mode, as he did in his post-match interview with Sky Italia. In his full press conference, he straight dismissed that he was even irritable, instead blaming the interviewer for trying to “replace the coach.” His unending positive spin despite a continuing spiral of results — this weekend’s line was “I see today’s game as a positive one because it will give us a nice push towards the end of the season” — is transparent BS.

Perhaps one could get away with saying that if this result came in a vacuum. At the end of the worst run of form this team has experienced since Gigi Delneri was coaching, it sounds disconnected from reality.

There have been games during this skid in which the players have born the brunt of the blame. The Napoli match, for example. But this one? This one falls straight on Allegri, as is the cold spell as a whole. The players aren’t responding anymore. If it continues, the club might have to throw a Hail Mary and see if a change before the end of the season helps salvage things. Regardless, this must be the last season Allegri is in charge. He simply doesn’t have it anymore.

LOOKING AHEAD

The international break is upon us. Juve return to action March 30 with the first of back-to-back games against Lazio, first a Serie A match in Rome and then the first leg of the Coppa Italia semifinal in Turin. After that comes a home match against Fiorentina, then the Derby della Mole at the Stadio Grande Torino.

Buckle up, folks.

The coach did not like the line of questioning that he was facing after the latest disappointment

The crisis at Juventus continues, with the tension now growing into the international break as the Bianconeri were held to a 0-0 stalemate by Genoa at home. Tempers are starting to fray in Turin, with first Dusan Vlahovic getting sent off for dissent late on in the game, and coach Massimiliano Allegri then blowing his top during his post-game press conference.

“There was a little tension in the first half due to the importance of the match, the need to win, so we were a bit blocked. It was a better second half, we had several good opportunities, did not allow Genoa any shots on goal, so we must take the positives from this performance.

“It is a difficult moment, but the attitude as a team was better than recent games.”

Juventus now have just the one win in the last eight games, with only seven points out of the last twenty-four on offer.

“It must not create tension, only a sense of responsibility, because we need to earn this place in the Champions League and if I’m not wrong we need 11 points from nine games to lock that down. We must keep believing in what we are doing.”

Allegri had been screaming on the touchline at Federico Chiesa and Filip Kostic.

“I ask for them, like the others, to have a good performance. Kean is better at playing between the lines, but at that moment Chiesa and Kostic were a little tired, so we needed those characteristics.

“Anything is possible, but the problem is that we need to get results. We have an objective to be achieved, to get back into the Champions League, and we need to get it. We are struggling at this moment and must avoid creating further confusion.”

The coach was then questioned on his reliance on the 3-5-2 formation, and his insistence on using Chiesa as a second striker, and he exploded.

“We are third in the table. Do you know how to be a coach? I don’t know how to be a journalist. I do not follow what the public says, I do what is right for the team. I do not dare tell a journalist how to do his job. So don’t tell me how to do mine.

“How did we get 46 points in the first 19 rounds? It’s the same answer. If you ask me a more intelligent question, then I will give a more intelligent answer. Seeing as I am a coach who works for Juventus, I have a target to achieve. I am disappointed the results aren’t coming at the moment, everyone makes mistakes, but I make choices for the good of the team. I have never followed the public mood.

“Your job is to ask me questions, then there are those who understand and those who don’t. I don’t know if this team becomes weak with more strikers. I only know my role is to take it into the top four and we are on track for that.

“Maybe I’m wrong not to use three strikers, maybe I’m right. I am pleased with what the lads did today and it’s a good launching off point for the next nine matches.”

Later on, Allegri was asked about his reaction to the journalist.

“I wasn’t irritable, I only replied to somebody who wanted to replace a coach.

“I am happy with what the team is doing. We did a lot in the first part of the season, but we are not doing enough in the second part. On May 26, we must be among the top four.

“The team proved to be united. I can’t blame the lads, and I see today’s game as a positive one because it will give us a nice push towards the end of the season.

“We didn’t improve just because we spent one day in retreat. Now we must remain quiet and work hard to return to winning.”

Well, that was completely unejoyable.

There was a time in my life when I wouldn’t look at the final score if I punted on watching a Sunday lunchtime kickoff live and actually follow along incredibly intently. Notifications on the cell phone would be silenced, then not even looked until I had watched the full replay and found out the final score a couple of hours after waking up and watching things play out.

Boy, am I sure glad I knew what was coming this time around.

Yes, I kept the notifications on this time around. I’ve learned the hard way over the years, and this season has only taught me to not continuously repeat mistakes of the past.

But, in the end, Juventus’ run of relegation-like form even though they’re still in the top four rolled on during Sunday’s lunchtime kickoff. It was far from the five-goal lunchtime roller coaster ride we saw a couple of weeks ago on the same Allianz Stadium field. Instead, Juventus’ matchup with 12th-place Genoa ended in a scoreless draw, as Max Allegri’s side looked both completely frustrated, but also out of ideas on how to turn the tide during this terrible run of form and simply out of ideas on how to break down a defense that’s just bang-average this season.

It truly was a day in which Juve’s attack was totally ineffective in the most simplest of terms.

They attempted 17 shots.

Only two of those shots were on target.

A staggering 11 of Juve’s shots were blocked. (That’s twice as many as Genoa had shots in total. Seriously.)

Dusan Vlahovic took seven shots. None of them were on target. (Four of them were blocked!)

With all of those attempts on goal, Juve finished with an xG of just 1.01.

Those are just the kind of numbers that make you turn any quite of smile you had before watching turn it completely upside down. It’s bad. It’s all bad. And just as we’ve said after the previous seven games of this brutal run of form, we don’t really know when things are actually going to turn for the better.

It certainly didn’t happen Sunday. For all of the possession, all those shots, for everything in between, none of it was really all that pretty or effective. It felt like they were just throwing spaghetti onto the ceiling over and over again to see if it actually stuck or tried to ram a square peg into a round hole with the hopes of something actually changing for the better. There was no fluidity, no real signs that a goal was actually going to happen outside of Samuel Iling-Junior hitting the post or Vlahovic’s pair of headers within a nine-minute span midway through the second half. There were crosses into the legs of Genoa players. There were shots into the legs of Genoa players. There just weren’t actually good things happen — and the boos that rained out down at halftime and at full time were representative of that.

Genoa had absolutely no desire to attack on a consistent basis in the second half. Absolutely none. They didn’t record a single shot after halftime. And yet, Juve couldn’t break down a team that came in on back-to-back losses and allowed five goals in the process.

“Juventus need to rediscover some vibrancy here,” the match announcer said as the second half kicked off in Turin.

Narrator: They didn’t, and now it’s going to be an international break in which there’s probably going to be a whole lot of speculation about where this team goes from here the rest of this season and most likely next season well.

RANDOM THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS

At least Juve kept a clean sheet? That really does seem like the only positive to take out of what was an otherwise horrid afternoon.

Also true: Juventus have not lost a game in which Mattia De Sciglio is in the matchday squad this season. So there’s that. I guess it’s another positive, folks.

Juve recorded an xG of 0.38 heading into the final 20 minutes of this game. That’s disgusting. No wonder the players — especially the attackers — are starting to get utterly frustrated with how things are these days.

That doesn’t necessarily excuse Vlahovic for bursting out in anger at his manager or for getting sent off, but you can at least completely understand why things are tense these days. It was an incredibly frustrating day, it’s been an incredibly frustrating two months and probably nothing close to what Vlahovic imagined when he signed for Juve two years ago. Vlahovic will be fined for his outburst, and deservedly so, but I get it. I really do get it.

Suspended last weekend and now suspended for the return from the international break in two weeks. Vlahovic should be well rested come April, at least.

Wojciech Szczesny was only called into action twice on this day. His first save was a pretty good one all of about 6 1⁄2 minutes after kickoff.

Filip Kostic, back in the starting lineup after back-to-back DNPs, is a man who is known for his crossing and assists. Against Genoa, Kostic was successful on two of his eight crosses and had an expected assist figure of 0.10. That’s not great!

How do we rate the Alberto Gilardino track suit? I quite like it.

I really do hope that Federico Chiesa has a nice international break because he’s going to go play for a manager who actually plays him where he’s meant to play and not continue to shoehorn him into a position that clearly isn’t working. Enjoy your time out on the wing the next two weeks, Fred, because we all know what it’s going to be like when you get back.

Very happy that Ruslan Malinovskyi didn’t score against Juventus because, well ... history.

Shows you what kind of day it was when Bremer, who didn’t have a bunch to do against a Genoa side that was far from the most forward thinking on Sunday, was the highest-rated player for Juventus on most stat sites. One of them days ...

I don’t know about you, but when Federico Gatti is hoofing crosses into the box when you need a goal, that doesn’t seem like the most effective way to try and score. I would much rather Gatti try and be on the end of crosses rather than be the one delivering them.

At least Kenan Yildiz got to play more than five minutes this time around. That’s cool.

Just play Samuel Iling-Junior from the start and be done with it. He’s better than this current version of Kostic.

Of course Moise Kean coming as close to as he’s come to scoring a goal in months gets called for offside just as the ball hammers off the post. Just one of those seasons for him.

So what will come first — Juventus actually winning a game or Kean scoring his first goal of the season?

Based on how Juventus are currently playing, it’s amazing this team was in the title race for as long as they were. They aren’t just coming back to earth quickly, they’re crashing back on down and trying to reach the earth’s core.

Seven points in the last eight games. To quote the great calcio mind of Silvio Dante: “Disgusting.”

What else needs to be said about this one? Juve are playing like crap, they continued to play like crap and there weren’t any goals scored.

One last game before a much-needed international break for all parties involved.

Ah, the lunchtime kickoff on a Sunday afternoon.

It’s here again. It’s back to remind us what time it is where we’re watching that’s not Italy. It’s here to remind us just how bad Juve has been over the last seven games because the last time they played at this time of day is the only occurrence of when they’ve won a game over said stretch.

See? Helpful! That’s why we love those lunchtime kickoffs.

Just as was the case a few weeks ago at lunchtime, the opponent will be somebody who was down in Serie B at this point in time 12 months ago. And with a handful of points the rest of the way, Alberto Gillardino’s Genoa side will have secured a spot in Serie A for next season, avoiding any kind of relegation worries — which is something that those they were promoted with can’t boast about. But for Juventus, it’s simple: try and get a win so that you can at least attempt to put this awful seven-game run of form behind you.

If Juve doesn’t win, though ...

OK, think positive thoughts. Even though that’s a very difficult thing to do at the moment, we will try and think positive thoughts. Yes, try. Let us try. Try very, very hard.

Juventus have one more game before the March international break to try and actually win a game.

As they take the field Sunday afternoon, Juventus will be 90 or so minutes away from their first international break of 2024. It has been quite the interesting 3 1⁄2 months of the new year — first for very good and encouraging reasons, but for the seven or eight weeks for the exact opposite of that. Considering the form that they are on, it’s probably a much-needed international break that is on the immediate horizon.

That may be just a guess, but it’s also a pretty safe assumption.

But as much as I’m sure a lot of Juve supporters want that break to already be taking place because, well, everything is not very good at the moment, there’s still those 90-plus minutes to play first. Which, knowing the current state of things, who knows if that can really be considered a good thing.

Either way, for the second time in a month, Juventus will be one half of the Serie A lunchtime kickoff. It just so happens that first one, late last month, was the only win that Max Allegri’s squad has recorded in the last seven games, a 3-2 victory over Frosinone which was far from what you would consider “vintage” or “reassuring” based on how they played both before and after. This Sunday’s opponent, 12th-place Genoa, just so happens to be one of the few teams to take points off Juventus when they were in much better form, and very much have things of importance in their own right as they try to lock up a spot in Serie A next season and try to put an end to a run of one win the last six games.

That’s right, people. We have a team that has won one game in their last seven outings hosting a team that has won just once in their last six games.

Over the last six games, Juventus and Genoa have combined to earn ... 10 points. That is less than Serie A heavyweights who go by the name of Monza have earned all on their own over that same six-game span. That’s also less than the two teams in front of Juventus in the Serie A standings, Inter Milan and AC Milan, as well as two of the teams chasing them for a Champions League spot, Bologna and Roma, have earned, too.

Things aren’t good and until they prove otherwise it’s going to be hard to see them fully getting out of this rut as the final two months of the season approaches.

Juve coaches and players alike have recognized the delicate nature of this moment, electing to go into a mini ritiro of sorts on Friday, a day earlier than usual for home games. The only way to know if that move actually pays off will be by how they play. And considering just how poor the results have been of late, one might simply be hoping that the final whistle sounds and three points are secured more than anything.

Of Juve’s last 10 remaining games this season, Genoa are the second-lowest ranked team on the schedule. Things were never going to be simple for Allegri’s squad, so now that you add in the kind of form that you see from relegation battlers rather than a team that still finds itself in the top four, it is a total mystery as to what this team will be able to do down the final stretch.

But, like I said, it’s not like Genoa are in much better form over the last six games. So maybe Juventus are catching Alberto Gilardino’s side at the right time. You could also say that Genoa are certainly catching Juve at the right time — which, considering how valuable points are at this juncture of the season, is not the greatest development. With Bologna winning on Friday night, the gap between third place and fourth is down to all of four points. Roma, under Daniele De Rossi, suddenly look like a team that is going to be tough to slow down as they face 19th-place Sassuolo on Sunday.

This mess is obviously Juventus’ making, and it’s now their No. 1 task to try and get out of it. That’s caused the scope of this season to drastically change over a couple of weeks and now months, but things will have to get back on track soon if Juve want to enjoy the May flowers that those April showers will bring.

TEAM NEWS

Adrien Rabiot is the biggest name of those who are back in the squad after their respective injury absence both short and much, much longer. Although Allegri admitted that Rabiot “doesn’t have 90 minutes in the tank just yet,” the Frenchman is expected to be in the starting lineup on Sunday afternoon.

MATTIA DE SCIGLIO BACK!

That’s right, folks — the Italian fullback who hasn’t been called up all season is back in the matchday squad as he is just one more step away from completing his comeback from major knee surgery. De Sciglio last appeared in a game on May 5, 2023, against Lecce before being forced out after 31 minutes after he tore his ACL in his right knee.

Another guy named Mattia, backup goalkeeper Mattia Perin, is also back in the squad after returning to full training earlier in the week. Perin missed the last five games with a knee injury he picked up in training.

The only Juventus player who will miss Genoa’s trip to Turin is Carlos Alcaraz.

Or so we thought. Allegri announced at his pre-match press conference that Arek Milik will miss Sunday’s game with an undisclosed injury. Milik will be re-evaluated after the international break.

The other two players who will not face Genoa are suspended: Nicolo Fagioli and Paul Pogba.

Dusan Vlahovic is back in the squad after serving a one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation last weekend against Atalanta. Vlahovic, who has a team-best 15 goals this season, is expected to start alongside Federico Chiesa up front on Sunday.

Despite the recent struggles, Allegri said the team has “had a good week” in training and that the team going into ritiro is a sign that they understand what needs to be done to try and right the ship.

JUVENTUS PLAYER TO WATCH

Juventus’ midfield has been a little less French the last couple of weeks.

So while the midfield has very much been a talking point for obvious reasons the last couple of weeks (and months) (and seasons) (and managerial stints), getting a player back that Juve has certainly missed is not nothing. Therefore, parlons les amis.

As much as Fabio Miretti has filled in admirably for Rabiot, it’s pretty clear that Juventus’ midfield has missed their vice captain. And simply Juventus as a whole. Miretti may be talented, but Rabiot he is not, and the up-and-down nature of his play is still very much present.

One can say that Rabiot is very much still an enigma after so much time in Turin and even as he approaches what could be another final few months in bianconero, but he is still very important to this Juventus side. There is no denying that even with the very obvious caveat that this Juve midfield is far from where things were five or six years ago before his arrival from Paris Saint-Germain.

But considering just how important these final 10 league games are, Juventus really do need Rabiot to 1) stay healthy and 2) be a productive player again like he has been at times this season. Easier said than done, of course, but this is the part of the season where Allegri needs his best players to play like just that. And as much as Contract Year Rabiot 2.0 might not be as consistently great as compared to version 1.0, that doesn’t mean he’s any less important.

So now, as he’s getting back into the lineup after dislocating a toe — which, honestly, still sounds painful as hell and it seems like it’s amazing he’s back in a couple of weeks — the hope is that Rabiot brings some stability to a team that is in desperate need of just that.

Coach’s comments as Juventus prepare to take on Genoa

Juventus are slipping and sliding furiously now with only one win in the last seven games, a run that has not only allowed the consistent Inter Milan to pretty much run away with the Scudetto, but now AC Milan have also made up ground on the Bianconeri and sit ahead of them with ten rounds to go.

With a game against 12th placed Genoa on the cards, coach Massimiliano Allegri gave an update on the squad fitness.

“We have had a good week of work. We’re aware of the moment we’re going through. We worked well, yesterday we stayed in Continassa because we know the importance of the match.

“We lost Arkadiusz Milik, who had a small problem, and we’ll evaluate him after the break. Mattia Perin, Mattia De Sciglio and Adrien Rabiot return.”

What has the team been working on to break out of the funk they’re in?

“I spoke with the team and together we decided to stay at Continassa. We must resume the work that we missed this month. We know that we have objectives to achieve such as the Champions League and the semi-final of the Coppa Italia.”

Is Filip Kostic ready to play?

“He can play tomorrow. In the last two games he didn’t play due to technical choices. Then Samuel Iling-Junior was doing well in training. They’re also choices to motivate the players.”

How would the forward line change with Milik injured?

“We have Kean, Chiesa, Vlahovic and Yildiz. Sorry for Milik, who in addition to the goal had put in a good performance. The update on Milik will be released today.”

With Juventus already qualified for the Club World Cup to be held in the summer of 2025, would that be a reason for him to stay and see out the last year of his contract?

“I believe it’s the result of the work done by the club in recent years. I have a year left on my contract, I’m very calm. We are and must be focused on this year’s objectives.

“At the moment we’ve qualified for the Club World Cup, a wonderful adventure, because it’s a new competition with great teams and it’ll be nice.

“The objectives must be achieved, playing in the Champions League next year. To do this we need to get to May 25th.”

Can Juve afford to keep going like this without wins?

“We need to try to get a win tomorrow. We’ve only won once to get back on the path that takes us to the end.

“It’s normal for the result to be like this, we would always like to get three points. Given the moment, the point was good, especially after a good performance. We need to analyse the mistakes made during the match.”

Juventus have been leaking goals recently against all kinds of opposition, what was the plan to turn the tide?

While he mentioned Adrien Rabiot would play, was he fit enough to see out a whole game?

“He doesn’t have enough for 90 minutes because he has always trained separately, but having him available is already a good sign.”

Why does Kenan Yildiz look to have been demoted?

“Absolutely nothing. In my opinion he was in decline a bit and Federico Chiesa was in good shape. He is fine now and is a player who will have an important future, but he must be left to grow in peace and without responsibility.”

The Frenchman has missed the last couple of weeks thanks to a dislocated toe.

The toe is good to go, it seems.

That means Juventus’ midfield depth crunch is very much in better shape than it was a few weeks ago when we were wondering how the heck Max Allegri was going to get through the next few weeks.

After missing the last two games due to a dislocated toe he suffered against Frosinone late last month, midfielder Adrien Rabiot returned to full training Friday and is all set to return to the starting lineup when Juventus faces Genoa during Sunday’s lunchtime kickoff at the Allianz Stadium. Rabiot was one of two midfielders to get hurt in the win over Frosinone nearly three weeks ago — what has proven to be Juve’s only win over the past seven games — and suddenly forcing Allegri to work with players who were second- or third-string (or not even playing in Italy) choices when the season began.

But now with both Weston McKennie and Rabiot back in the fold, the crunch has thankfully eased to the point where January signee Carlos Alcaraz is currently the only Juve midfield out due to injury.

Now with Rabiot healthy again, Allegri will have the midfield that he has been using for much of the 2023-24 season, with the Frenchman and McKennie playing on either side of Manuel Locatelli. Those three players are all in the top six of minutes played for Juventus this season.

Considering that playing in the Champions League next season is reportedly a big determining factor in Rabiot’s contract status beyond the next few months, getting him back in the lineup should be something that helps Allegri’s squad lock up a top four finish over the next month or so. The problem is, we were thinking something like that about four weeks ago and then things have gone to absolute crap, with the amount of points dropped over that span becoming bigger and bigger on top of the fact Juve’s defense is suddenly posting its worst four-game stretch in over three decades.

Hopefully the return of Rabiot will be able to bring some sort of stability to the midfield and the squad as a whole that it has lacked over the last couple of games.

Rabiot has missed five games due to injury (and another due to yellow card accumulation) this season. As long as he doesn’t miss any more time with an injury this season, he is on track to play in at least 30 league games for the fourth straight season with Juventus.
